Starting in the 2011-2012 school year, the AST has spearheaded a project to initiate Project Lead The Way (PLTW) pre-engineering programs, specifically Gateway to Technology at Jacobsen Middle School and high school level PLTW at Tehachapi High School.
Working hand-in-hand with the Air Force Research Laboratory at Edwards AFB, regional high-technology industries and interested foundations AST spurred the donation of close to $60,000 to fund the purchase of supplies and equipment to get these nationally recognized programs underway in the Fall of 2011.
The objective of these PLTW [programs is to interest more of our youth in careers in science, technology, engineering and math, all while urging them to return to this area to work once they complete their education.
The Gateway to Technology Program at Jacobsen Middle school was cut from the curriculum (as were all electives) during the 2012-2013 school year due to drastic budget cuts. AST has worked with the district and thoughtful donors to keep the spirit of the Gateway to Technology program going as a once a week after school program called JEMS (Jacobsen Engineering, math & Science).
